My crucible experience

The TATA Crucible - business quiz is a bi-yearly event in the Indian world of quizzing and has also extended to the international arena starting last year (2007) where it made its prescence felt in Singapore.

The biz quiz is held twice a year, one for students and the other for corporates. This year around I was at the Chinmaya Heritage centre in Chennai on March 8 where the where the Chennai round of quizzing happened. Not as a part of the audience but as a participant. Couldn't believe myself as I had always wanted to be a part of it but something turned up everytime and made me jus a part of the audience or not even that.

This time over I was thrilled when my friend D said he would like to participate as well. So we made a team and represented our college. Thou' we didn't make it to the finals we feel truly enlightened from the experience we got out of the high voltage quizzing. The finalists from Chennai to compete at the national level quiz is a team from Anna university.

Best web hosting services

What is the sign of a good web hosting company? At the most the site which the company hosts has to be accessible at all times. But many companies fail achieving the first step itself, causing major disappoinment to all its customers and more so for people like kaushal seth whose day to day work is done through his site.

Kaushal seth is a template designer for wordpress and is also an avid blogger. The whole issue of problems faced by him due to the poor web hosting company his site belongs to he decided to list out the top web hosting services with the help of his friends and reading reviews.

After all the talks and discussions the three sites he has short listed include Host monster, Host gator and yahoo host. I'm sure this information would have been of some use to my readers as I can see most of them here love blogging and I do think they would want their site to be down anytime.

Monday morning Inspiration # 25

There was a boy in India who was sent by his parents to a boarding school. Before being sent away this boy was the brightest student in his class. He was at the top in every competition. He was a champion.
But the boy changed after leaving home and attending the boarding school. His grades started dropping. He hated being in a group. He was lonely all the time. And there were especially dark times when he felt like committing suicide. All of this because he felt worthless and that no one loved him.

His parents started worrying about the boy. But even they did not know what was wrong with him. So his dad decided to travel to the boarding school and talk with him.

They sat on the bank of the lake near the school. The father started asking him casual questions about his classes, teachers and sports. After some time his dad said, 'Do you know son, why I am here today?"

The boy answered back, "to check my grades?"

"No, no" his dad replied, "I am here to tell you that you are the most important person for me. I want to see you happy. I don't care about grades. I care about you. I care about your happiness. YOU ARE MY LIFE."

These words caused the boy's eyes to fill with tears. He hugged his dad. They didn't say anything to each other for a long time.

Now the boy had everything he wanted. He knew there was someone on this earth who cared for him deeply. He meant the world to someone. And today this young man is in college at the top of his class and no one has ever seen him sad!

Thanks a lot dad. YOU ARE MY LIFE.

"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around." - Leo Buscaglia

My week

It has been a busy and fun week in college. We had our cultural fest(Milan) starting 14th(friday) till 16th (sunday). I was a part of the hospitality commitee and enjoyed myself to the core. I was initially a little sceptical as to how the whole event will turn out to be as it was pouring cats and dogs on the eve of the cultural fest, but then it all turned out to be fun for all of us.

The best event was the Choreo nite which was on 14th evening , the following evening saw Junkyard Groove (rock band) performing at the SRM grounds . Didn't make it to the rock show and also heard it wasn't all that great.

Today I got back home and missed attending a day of culturals and tomorrow we have off. That's how my week went by , but sure will have a mouch more hectic time in the coming weeks..

Have a great weekend! :)

Monday morning Inspiration # 24

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn't hear the band - he could see it. In his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days and weeks passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed.

It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window.

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."

Epilogue:
There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations.
Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled.
If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy.
Today is a gift, that's why it is called the present.

Monday morning Inspiration # 23

I bumped into a stranger as he passed by,
"Oh, excuse me please", was my reply.
He said,"Please excuse me too; Wasn't even watching for you,"
We were very polite, this stranger and I.
We went on our way and said good bye.
But at home a different story is told.
How we treat our loved ones, young and old.

Later that day cooking the evening meal,
My daughter stood beside me very still.
When I turned,I nearly knocked her down.
"Move out of way" I said with a frown.
She walked away, her little heart was broken.
I didn't realise how harshly I'd spoken.

While I lay awake in bed,
a still inner voice said,
"While dealing with a stranger, courtesy you use,
But the children you love, you seem to abuse."

I quietly went and knelt by my daughter's bed;
"Wakeup little girl, wake up" I said.
"daughter I'm so sorry for the way I acted today;
I shouldn't have yelled at you that way."
She said,"Oh ,Mom ,that's okay.I love you anyway."
I said,"Daughter,I love you too."

If we die tomorrow, the company that we are working will easily replace us in matter of days. The society around us may not even miss us.But the family we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we are at our best with the rest and showcase are worst to the best. People we love the most are the ones we hurt the most, for we reserve our nasty best for our nearest and dearest ones.
