Monday morning Inspiration # 31

In 1883, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by an idea to build a spectacular bridge connecting New York with the Long Island. However bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was an impossible feat and told Roebling to forget the idea. It just could not be done. It was not practical. It had never been done before.

Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge. He thought about it all the time and he knew deep in his heart that it could be done. He just had to share the dream with someone else. After much discussion and persuasion he managed to convince his son Washington, an up and coming engineer, that the bridge in fact could be built.

Working together for the first time, the father and son developed concepts of how it could be accomplished and how the obstacles could be overcome. With great excitement and inspiration, and the headiness of a wild challenge before them, they hired their crew and began to build their dream bridge.
The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which resulted in him not being able to walk or talk or even move.

"We told them so."
"Crazy men and their crazy dreams."
"It`s foolish to chase wild visions."

Everyone had a negative comment to make and felt that the project should be scrapped since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge could be built. In spite of his handicap Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning desire to complete the bridge and his mind was still as sharp as ever.

He tried to inspire and pass on his enthusiasm to some of his friends, but they were too daunted by the task. As he lay on his bed in his hospital room, with the sunlight streaming through the windows, a gentle breeze blew the flimsy white curtains apart and he was able to see the sky and the tops of the trees outside for just a moment.

It seemed that there was a message for him not to give up. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do was move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife.

He touched his wife's arm with that finger, indicating to her that he wanted her to call the engineers again. Then he used the same method of tapping her arm to tell the engineers what to do. It seemed foolish but the project was under way again.

For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife's arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory as a tribute to the triumph of one man's indomitable spirit and his determination not to be defeated by circumstances. It is also a tribute to the engineers and their team work, and to their faith in a man who was considered mad by half the world. It stands too as a tangible monument to the love and devotion of his wife who for 13 long years patiently decoded the messages of her husband and told the engineers what to do.

Perhaps this is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical handicap and achieves an impossible goal.

Often when we face obstacles in our day-to-day life, our hurdles seem very small in comparison to what many others have to face. The Brooklyn Bridge shows us that dreams that seem impossible can be realised with determination and persistence, no matter what the odds are.
Even the most distant dream can be realized with determination and persistence

Ice Princess - The movie

I was watching this movie sometime back after almost a year. My dad had got the dvd from the dvd library after reading about it in my blog here. This is one movie which I would love to watch over and over again.

** spoiler alert **
Tranchtenberg plays Casey Carley a brilliant high school science student who initially films figure skaters for her physics project which would help her get a scholarship from Harvard. But, as time passes by she learns it herself to understand the sport better thinking it would help her in her project but eventually falls for the sport and turns out to be a figure skater herself. All this despite her mum wanting her to get the scholarship and go to college after her high school. That's when she makes her mum realise that she has shattered her mum's dream and not hers. Her heart was always in figure skating. The movie is ,how she goes about achieving her passion.

This is one of my favourite scenes from the movie and has always brought tears to my eyes. Her mum comes to see her perform despite she being against her, it is this support that actually makes her win :)

My day, blog reviews...

My day was super cool today. Thou' I was held up in a traffic jam right in the morning before my exam it didn't really bother me much as I had loads of time for my exam to start, but was jus' a little worried as my mum had come along to drop me in college before she could get to work.

It is times like these that I wonder how much sacrifices parents do to make their child happy and comfortable. My college is couple of hours drive from my home. So that totals it to 4 hrs of travelling(to and fro) for which we will have to leave home at 6 in the morning . Who would ever like to give away 2 hrs of their morning sleep ?? and travel such long distance jus' because I have an exam and get back to work late coz of the traffic jam .. I guess this what they call unconditional love :)

My exam was pretty cool today. 4 down and 3 more to go. I'm already dreaming about my holidays. Have loads of things to do, wonder if I would be able to pack them all within one month of my vacation time.

Monday morning Inspiration # 30

It is the season of placements in universities in this part of the world. After a lot of hardships and struggle through the course it is always common to find emotional highs and lows during times like these.Cheer up friends , here is a story for you . I came across this when i was browsing for some inspirational stuff . It is written by Shuchi Gupta.

And for others it is yet another motivational story with a message To believe in your dreams and go behind them, no matter what.

I hope this story encourages you in times when your dreams seem far away, or, when you are not able to believe any words of encouragement deep in your heart.

I was doing a diploma course. When the course ended, placements started. The first company came and I was not selected. My roommate got selected though. I felt good for her, but miserable myself because I started thinking that I'm not worth anything good. I'm worthless. My room mate had not come in until dark and I was feeling so miserable that I did not even want to enter the room we shared because I had memories of both of us studying in it all through the course. I felt so miserable that I found myself crying standing on the road talking to one of my classmates, unable to control my tears. When my roommate came, she consoled me, said all the words to encourage me, pointed out the mistakes I had made in the interview so that I would do better the next day. She made me gather strength for the next set of companies that were scheduled to come the next day.

She went to bed, saying that I should wake her up if I wanted to know something about the topics we had to study for the interview. After she went to sleep, I started saying to myself half-heartedly, "Tomorrow is MY day. The company cannot go without selecting me. I will get myself selected tomorrow." I did not feel this from deep inside but I kept on saying this the whole night, probably in my sleep too, and in the morning until I faced my interview. It went ok, not too good. Still I kept on saying these one-liners to myself but now there was a difference. I found a little belief started growing that "It actually IS my day" and now it was not half-heartedly that I said all that, I started to believe it. I was so charged up by this time by my growing belief that I found myself totally at ease and confident of selection that I found myself singing with my class-mates while people were going through the interview in their respective turns.

I went through the last stage of selection, which went quite well. In the evening when the results were announced I was not selected. I went home thinking that something is wrong, this was not possible. I was not in the mood to read the topics for the interview next day with some other company.

Morning came and I sat for another written exam for the first company, still thinking about what had happened yesterday. Before sitting for the exam, I was crying when one of my classmates tried to console me that I should not worry, everything will be fine. They gave the exam and it went bad.

I came out of the room and one student told me that our head of the placements was searching for me. I went to his cabin and he congratulated me saying, "You have been selected by the company that came yesterday". I couldn't believe it. I found myself saying, "I knew this had to happen". My heart said to me, "See! I told you, you could do it. Just believe in yourself!"

My belief eventually had made me achieve what I was wishing for. Then at that point I remembered that I had an intuition that I would get selected by this company when they had come to give their pre-placement talks.

So if you have a dream then just believe that you can achieve it no matter what. Even when you can't feel deep in your heart any words of encouragement, just believe in your dream and your heart will finally show you the way. And believe that there is God who sees us every moment. Believe in intuitions and gut feelings for they are voices of your sub-conscious mind.

P.S: The movie Ice princess has the same theme as well " Believe in yourself, and achieve your dreams no matter what". Catch up with the movie when your feeling low and Im sure it will boost up your confidence.

My weekend

After an exhausting 3 hrs in the examination hall, I was finally out and pretty much excited about the rest of my day . I had plans to go to bessy beach (Its one of the beaches in Chennai, where most Chennaites chill out during weekends..). On reaching there, I headed straight to the cafe coffee day in Planet Yumm. Now most of you must be thinking its the usual fun.. Yup, it was fun but with a difference.

I was actually there to meet Mr.Debashish Ghosh (author, Voyage to Exceellence). It was a business meet (now do I sound like a grown up...) well.. wel.. I was a school kid when I first saw him during the book launch in Landmark. And now I feel really fortunate to work with him in a project. About the project, i will blog about it once its up. We had some serious talks and he was an interesting person indeed.

Got back home and crashed ..Today was awesome fun as well, went for a lunch out with family and it was my treat (from the money I made outta blogging ads :) )

Now I got to get back to studying.I'm half way through my exams and have 4 more papers *sigh*

Hope you all had a fun weekend too !!

Its my birthday!!

I turned 20 today amidst all my exams.. lol.. Looking back into my life , I undergo mixed feelings but I cherish them all. It has been a complete roller coaster with both good as well as bad happenings and the one fact that life's taught me is that change is the only constant thing in this world. As for today, no special happenings except that I had my Maths exam*sigh* and that too a bad one... Might go out for dinner with my family :)

monday morning Inspiration # 29

One day an expert in time management was speaking to a group of business students and, to drive home a point, used an illustration those students will never forget. As he stood in front of the group of high-powered overachievers he said, Okay, time for a quiz.
Then he pulled out a one-gallon, wide mouth mason jar and set it on the table in front of him. Then he produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, Is this jar full? Everyone in the class said, Yes.

Then he said, “Really?” He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. Then he dumped some gravel in and shook the jar causing pieces of gravel to work themselves down into the space between the big rocks. Then he asked the group once more, Is the jar full? By this time the class was on to him. Probably not, one of them answered.

Good he replied. He reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand. He started dumping the sand in the jar and it went into all of the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, Is this jar full? No the class shouted.

Once again he said, Good. Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked at the class and asked, What is the point of this illustration? One eager beaver raised his hand and said, The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard you can always fit some more things in it. No, the speaker replied, that’s not the point. The truth this illustration teaches us is: If you don’t put the big rocks in first, you’ll never get them in at all.

What are the big rocks in your life? Time with your loved ones? faith, education, your dreams? A worthy cause? Teaching or mentoring others? Remember to put these BIG ROCKS in first or you’ll never get them in at all.

So, tonight, or in the morning, when you are reflecting on this short story, ask yourself this question: What are the big rocks in my life?

Then, put those in your jar first.
